Heroes of Journalism

Ernie Pyle:

Ernie Pyle His final, unfinished article, "On Victory in Europe," is one of my favorite pieces, though it haunts me:

Dead men by mass production - in one country after another - month after month and year after year. Dead men in winter and dead men in summer. Dead men in such familiar promiscuity that they become monotonous. Dead men in such monstrous infinity that you come almost to hate them. These are the things that you at home need not even try to understand... We saw him, saw him by the multiple thousands. That's the difference...

Respectfully, I disagree with his final conclusions -- because I believe that people at home do need to understand what happens in war -- like "Operation Enduring Freedom" AKA the Iraq War.

We need to know because each American is responsible for electing our leaders -- and if we are ill-informed and allow issues to remain incomprehensible to us, then we cannot knowledgeably elect our leaders.

I speak as someone who has also covered war and conflict, and here are samples of my reportage:

(There is an Ernie Pyle Historic Site in his hometown of Dana, Indiana, supported by the Scripps Howard Foundation.)
