Heroes of Journalism

Walter Cronkite

Walter Cronkite As I grew up, there was one great voice that brought the nation the news every night. I miss those days. I miss Eric Severeid's editorials. I miss the style of news coverage. Most of all, I miss Walter's delivery -- don't get me started on that sign-off.

I met Walter some years later when he was awarded the President's Award for Lifetime Achievement from the Overseas Press Club, of which I am also a member. He spoke to a rapt audience -- but then who is not fully engaged by his words? Afterwards, I went up to the podium to talk to him. I cannot remember what either of us said; I do remember how graciously he gave me his attention, instantly making me believe in myself as a young journalist. Thank you, Walter.
